Some of our friends got to see Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball concert and may have heard his song Better Days, one of my top 5 favorites from Bruce. These are certainly better days.
Since the last blog post Linda has gained strength, energy, and appetite - all good. Last week ended a lot better than it had started. Jess and TJ were down for the weekend and Adrienne visited with her college roommate Liz.
Linda met with her surgeon last Monday and surgery is on track for April 24. The meds she had been taking for acid reflux worked well and she is now off the prescription stuff and relying on Tums when needed. There were a couple of cool days during the week, but on the warmer days she gets more and more ambitious on her walks through the neighborhoods surrounding our place. The azaleas, dogwoods, and everything else are in full bloom - and yes, she stops and smells the flowers - a non-prescription therapy that really does lower the blood pressure!
On Friday we met with the Oncologist who continues to be very enthusiastic about Linda's progress. Linda will start hormone therapy a couple of weeks after surgery and radiation on May 29. The side effects from the hormone therapy are similar to menopause: hot flashes and moodiness. I'm not yet sure what MY side effects are going to be, but I suspect hiding in a closet may be one of them. Radiation will start May 29 and that will cause burning (like sunburn) at the radiation site, and fatigue. None of those side effects are expected to be as debilitating as those caused by chemotherapy.
For now she'll enjoy a couple of weeks of getting better, and more days like this weekend. We ate out Friday and Saturday and saw a minor league soccer game (Richmond Kickers). Today we joined Adrienne and Greg who hosted an Easter pot luck dinner for several friends, many of whom were away from family and got together for some food and fun. Tomorrow night we're going to see a jazz band at the university.
"Better days are shining through."
