It sucks when cancer enters your life. It kicks your ass. Some people stay kicked, some don’t. Those of you who know Linda will find this story perfectly normal, despite the context of this insidious disease.
The doctor delivered the news last Monday (1/9/12). “You have breast cancer” – a shock that propels body and soul well beyond fear. “Come to see me on Wednesday morning” is an unavoidable urgency…like being dropped into river rapids and figuring out what to do next. So we met Dr. V together (this is what the line “in sickness and in health” means). With both of Dr. V’s barrels firing, we took what she had to say and agreed to do battle in that “let’s do this” kind of way.
We left the doctor’s office satisfied that there were unambiguous next steps with dates, times, and places to be. Linda wouldn’t have it any other way. We processed all of this in the car on the way home…but , at Linda’s request, we had to stop at City Hall in Richmond to pay our taxes.
Really? Taxes? Now? Was that not a cancer surgeon’s office we just came from?
Oh, and then she called Adrienne and Jessica to let them know how the doctor’s visit went.
I guess the moral of the story and the guiding principle for winning is you just have to do what needs doing when it needs to be done. So, it is in that spirit that we will keep you abreast of all the titillating news as we go for bust on this detour.

A fabulous start to the blog-of-all-blogs. I will be following every word! So happy I know what the living room looks like - I'm sure the pink roses are perfect (nice job, Briney!). Signing off for now....I'll think of you all day tomorrow (my boss is at a conference!). Laura
ReplyDeleteAs Bob adroitly pointed out in his closing sentence, laughter is the best medicine so keep smiling and try hard to laugh at his jokes even on the darkest days! It is your light and positive energy that will get you (and carry your family) through this. Love and Prayers to you! Thank you for keeping me apprised of the situation! -Eliz
ReplyDeleteOk, so this appears to be written by a guy who dabbled in journalism in high school and college... way to get back into it... need determines timing, huh? I also see that you and Linda are approaching this with as much humor as seriousness, and with that eye turned toward success and normalcy at the same time. By best wishes, and my daily prayers, toward your journey - er, detour, and that this brings you back to the beautiful road you've been traveling together... ever since Fish's party... I can see, in the words of your first two blog entries, the context and content of meaning that started your journey together... "But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you." God bless, and kick some cancer ass !!!
